We want to see brilliantly done films. We want to see the beautifully built scenes come to life and present us a magnificent film that makes us shiver, laugh or cry. Shutter Island is one of those films. Based on the book from Dennis Lehane, this is an outstanding piece of Art that everyone (and I literally mean everyone) needs to watch.
I read a review that said: "This is a film that creeps and crawls, and is filled with dark corners. And it is all heightened by the coming storm that looms over the island. This is classic film noir." And he's totally right. This is one of my favorite horror and mystery films ever made and Scorsese knew how to create this well structured story from the beginning to the end without spilling it over the table.
This is a film that makes people think. And we know that's the last thing the majority of people want. Usually they wish for an easy film that doesn't make them wonder about it too much, because that gets too confusing. That's why I believe those people shouldn't watch Shutter Island or make a review of it. If you're not willing to watch a film for its beauty and for how dark and mysterious it is, then don't talk about films at all.
Shutter Island is one of the best well made psychological horror and thriller films. It's built over a layer of darkness and fear, which rises the tension and creepiness of the environment. There's always a feeling of how everything is going to break loose. It starts with characters Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio), a federal Marshal, and his partner Chuck (Mark Rufallo). We find them on a boat heading towards a very foggy like island to investigate an escape. From this first scene, there's a premise of a very dark and mysterious storyline. The movie follows Teddy's footsteps while he enrolls in an investigation that doesn't bring out the best in him. We see everything in his point of view and we question the same things that he does. He's seeking for the truth that he so desperately wants to find, which is the main focus of the story. In fact, the whole storyline is based on the critical point of: what is the truth?
For me this is one of Scorsese's best films. It's a difficult one for the audience, which means not everyone will love it, many will hate it. But truth is, this film is brilliant. Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo's performance are excellent. I particularly enjoyed the scenes where Teddy hallucinates with his wife and we're able to see bits of the story that are being put back together as the film progresses.
One thing that is particularly interesting in this film is how every character seems to be terrified of something or someone, as if there's this big terror that flies over that big island. Everyone is so anxious and nervous. The details are absolutely perfect. I recommend watching this film a second time when you know the ending and notice the little things. The little things matter, kids.
I honestly can't remember a scene that I didn't like. My friends, this film is a masterpiece. Young aspiring film directors, please watch Shutter Island and inspire yourselves in the outstanding work of Martin Scorsese.
Every scene is perfectly filmed, perfectly rehearsed and perfectly studied. I love how the story progresses in front of us, how we are also able to gather the clues and make our own theories, while the main characters discover it for themselves.
